The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) and the Ministry of Environment carried out a cleaning day in the Cerron Grande reservoir or Lake Suchitlan, which was affected by garbage, plastics, refrigerators, among other objects found on the shore of the lake during the recent rains.

In the area of Potonico, Chalatenango, an accumulation of tons of garbage was found due to the most recent rains. This cleaning day was developed with the support of cooperatives of the sector to extract the waste, mostly plastics, which were dragged by the rivers to reach this area.

This joint effort will continue to remove all this waste and counteract contamination in this wetland.

According to the head of CEL's Social Responsibility Unit, Alexander Zamora, "The last cleaning action we did in the Cerrón Grande reservoir we removed 40 tons of plastic, now we hope to double it", he said.

He also urged the population. "Be aware, the garbage from the streets falls into the drains, reaches the rivers and is deposited in the reservoirs".

CEL carries out permanent campaigns in the Cerrón Grande reservoir and promotes environmental responsibility and care for natural resources.

There are 446 cooperatives working in the activity and each one of them is made up of between 80 and 90 people", said the official.
