The meeting, which will take place on september 22 and 23 in San José, will be entitled "Challenges for agriculture in the Americas to face the climate crisis".
This meeting is organized by the el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), the ministerial meeting will serve as a preliminary regional coordination body for COP27, in which the 197 countries that are signatories to the Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (CMNUCC) will participate and in which agriculture will play a key role.
At the meeting in Costa Rica, the agricultural authorities of the Americas, multilateral lending agencies and IICA are expected to identify priority areas for climate action, taking into account the unique role of regional agriculture in leading global efforts in this area and the benefits that would be generated in terms of food and nutritional security, poverty reduction, sustainability, water conservation and management, among others.
The meeting will be opened by Rattan Lal, IICA Special Envoy for COP 27, the world's leading authority on soil sciences and the 2020 World Food Prize; Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA and Costa Rican government authorities.
