Cambiá a verde: join Movistar and make better use of your unused cell phones

Written by Evelyn Alas

Movistar El Salvador in its constant work for the environment relaunches its recycling program for unused cell phones under the name "Cambiá a Verde", promoting the proper disposal of phones at the end of their useful life and sensitizing people on the proper handling of unused electronics.

Cell phones contain parts that can be recycled and reused, such as plastic, copper, gold and silver. They also contain elements such as mercury, cadmium or nickel, which could be harmful to the environment if not properly managed.

Therefore, through this program Movistar encourages salvadorans to responsibly manage the cell phones they no longer use, avoiding contamination and protecting everyone's health.

Movistar promotes innovation with sustainability. For this reason, it is the first operator in the country with a permanent electronics recycling program. In addition, it is the only operator in the country with ISO 14001-2015 environmental certification, granted by the international certifier AENOR, for its Environmental Management System. This confirms the company's strategy, focused on environmental protection, pollution prevention and optimal management of resources in balance with the development of its business in a responsible manner.

"From Movistar we work actively for the environment and with our program Cambiá a Verde, we seek to have a direct impact on the fight against pollution by ensuring the proper management of disused cell phones, preventing their components from mixing with the soil, air or aquifers", explained Eduardo Solórzano, director of Corporate Affairs of Movistar El Salvador.

The "Cambiá a Verde" program is active throughout the year in 23 Movistar stores located in the main shopping malls of the country. Salvadorans will be able to recycle their phones in the mailboxes located in any of the participating stores. All they have to do is go to a Movistar advisor and hand in the phone to be recycled.

"This program is a sign of the commitment we have at Movistar to bring connectivity of the highest quality to salvadorans, but also of our interest in contributing to building a better country for everyone", said Solórzano.

To ensure the proper treatment of all collected cell phones, Movistar will work its program with Zartex S.A. de C.V., a company specializing in the integrated management of electronic equipment out of use and has certifications from the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARN) to do this job.

Movistar El Salvador bases its sustainability strategy on environmental protection, education, equal opportunities for men and women, and inclusion, thus becoming a trusted strategic ally for society.
