AES builds solar plant for commercial customer

Written by Evelyn Alas

Recently, AES El Salvador through its Solutions Division built a solar plant for the company Apopa Energy. The new photovoltaic park is located in the Municipality of Metapán, Department of Santa Ana and has the capacity to generate 1.5 megawatts (MWp) of energy.

"We want to continue contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint through solar photovoltaic generation. Therefore, together with AES we developed the new plant, complying with all technical standards, which will also allow us to obtain economic benefits. We will expand our commercial relationship with AES to continue betting on the environment", said María José Callejas, Apopa Energy's Generation Projects Coordinator.

The energy generated by the new solar plant will be injected into the electrical distribution network of AES CLESA, which will be responsible for delivering it to homes and businesses in the municipality of Metapán and surrounding areas.

"Our customers are seeking to contribute to environmental protection through the generation and use of green energy. At AES we are pleased to be able to contribute to the environmental sustainability goals of our client Apopa Energy, with this we are helping to diversify the country's energy matrix, accelerating the future of energy together", said Roberto Sandoval, General Manager of the Solutions Division of AES El Salvador.

The new solar plant has more than 3,400 monocrystalline photovoltaic modules; nine state-of-the-art inverters that convert the energy generated from direct current to alternating current; and a power substation that prepares the energy generated for injection into the distribution network. In addition, it will prevent the emission of 736 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere per year.

AES: Leading the transition to renewable energy

In line with its global objective of accelerating the future of energy, AES El Salvador contributes 25% of the total solar energy generated in the country. Currently, through its Generation Division, it produces 116 MW of photovoltaic energy through 13 solar plants located in different parts of the country.

Also, through its Solutions Division, AES offers its clients in the commercial, industrial and residential sector, the design, construction, operation and maintenance of rooftop and ground-mounted solar photovoltaic power plants. To date, AES El Salvador's Solutions Division, has built 36.4 MWp in photovoltaic projects since its inception in 2017, and has 40.5 MWp of solar energy under development for different clients, totaling 76.9 MWp sold to date.

During 2022, AES will continue to develop, design and build more solar PV projects that will contribute to accelerate the future of energy in El Salvador.
