Walmart strengthens its commitment to become a regenerative company in El Salvador

Written by Evelyn Alas

Walmart de México y Centroamérica in El Salvador continues working together with its customers, business partners, and suppliers in multiple actions to become a regenerative company. To achieve this goal, Walmart is developing several actions to promote sustainability, support small and medium-sized companies, and support the Banco de Alimentos of El Salvador.

Sustainability

Walmart has invested in its Distribution Centers, renewable energy generation systems through solar panels that generate 662 megawatts per hour per year, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 190 Salvadoran families and avoids the emission of more than 113 tons of greenhouse gases.

"Walmart continues to work to become a regenerative company, driving positive change in supply chains, which is why we seek to source responsibly, protecting natural resources and reducing waste and emissions", said Sandra Cáceres, Corporate Affairs Coordinator for Walmart de México y Centroamérica in El Salvador.

Support for manufacturing and agricultural SMEs

In 2022 Walmart purchased more than US$5 million from salvadoran farmers and more than US$9 million from manufacturing SMEs, an increase of 16% over 2021.

Sixty percent of the fruits and vegetables sold in Walmart stores come from salvadoran farmers.

Support for the Banco de Alimentos Program

Last year the retail company donated 708,455.48 pounds, with a value of US$687,276.84 to the Asociación Civil Alimentos Solidarios, which manages the Banco de Alimentos Program in El Salvador.

From 2013 to date, Walmart has donated to this institution: 3,394,965.48 lbs of products suitable for human consumption but not for sale, benefiting more than 42 thousand salvadorans.

Walmart led the Collective Impact for Food campaign, collecting 18,526.00 kilos of products locally, with a value of US$44,762.94, together with allied suppliers.

It also provided US$10,000, equivalent to 11,000 pounds of food for the "Alimenta el Espíritu Navideño" campaign.

The company reactivated regenerative volunteering with a day at the Banco de Alimentos warehouse as part of its zero-waste strategy.

Other actions to benefit the communities

To help salvadoran families during the national emergency affected by tropical storm Julia, Walmart donated US$25,000 in food and hygiene products in El Salvador.

Other donations were given to the Fundación Salvadoreña de la Tercera Edad, FUSATE, Asociación Institución Salesiana, Asociación AGAPE de El Salvador, Fundación Salvador del Mundo, FUSALMO, Fundación TCS and Fundación Glasswing, totaling US$29,479 for the benefit of 5,900 salvadorans.

With the Haz Magia 2022 Program, Walmart benefited 1,300 salvadoran children.

A company that fosters an inclusive work environment

Walmart continues to work to provide equal opportunities for all. To date, 5.4% of Walmart's talent has a disability, demonstrating the experience of inclusion, one of its main values that has been recognized by the British Embassy in El Salvador with the award

"Disability Awards", granted to companies that carry out actions and efforts to promote the inclusion and hiring of people with disabilities.

As a benchmark for employability in El Salvador, Walmart Mexico and Central America has more than 4 thousand associates, 51% of whom are female talent. Likewise, 49% of all leadership positions are held by women.

All these actions made it possible for Walmart to obtain the First Place as the most attractive company to work for in the commercial sector, according to the EMAT 2022 Survey.
