4 out of 5 salvadorans abroad send remittances to the country according to survey: BCR

As part of this effort, the Banco Central de Reserva  (BCR) conducted a survey to learn in depth about salvadorans living in the United States. The Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM) supported the survey with the objective of facilitating the design of adequate public policies in favor of the sector.

The survey, called "Salvadoran Population in the United States", delved into the demographic profile, occupations, educational level, investment intentions, possibilities of returning to the country, use of digital wallets and needs for financial products of the diaspora in the United States.

The results showed that four out of five salvadorans send remittances to support family and friends, with an average of 15 times per year per person, of which 4.6% do it through innovative mechanisms such as digital wallets.

It is estimated that there are 842,603 salvadorans in the United States who have a savings account (63.6% of the total). 56.6% have an account in the United States and 12.8% in El Salvador.

1.1 million people send family remittances to support their families on a regular basis. The main uses of remittances are: consumption, water, electricity, cable and internet, and medical expenses.

It was identified that 40.6% of people who send remittances are the only source of income of the household that receives them, 49.9% have an irregular migratory status and 28.1% have residency or citizenship. Respondents expressed broad interest in accessing financial products.

"Remittances are a very important economic support for about 31% of salvadoran households; it constitutes a very important flow for the macroeconomic stability and development of the country. On average, remittances represent 25% of our Gross Domestic Product", said the head of the BCR, Douglas Rodríguez.

In addition, 92.5 % obtain their income from a job, 7.1 % from a business and 1.9 % from a pension. It was known that 57.7% of Salvadoran adults intend to invest in El Salvador and 60.2% plan to return to live.

With a sample of 1,426 salvadorans over 18 years of age, the survey was conducted from august 8 to 18 in the states of California, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, New York and New Jersey. This is part of the commemoration of International Migrants Day, which is celebrated every december 18.

57.7% of salvadorans in the U.S. are interested in investing in El Salvador, while 60.2% intend to return to their country at some point, especially to achieve family reunification.
