Price per pound of cheese increased US$1.10 in recent months

Written by Evelyn Alas

In recent days salvadorans have reported a high increase in the prices of some dairy products, for example: the cost per pound of soft hard cheese which used to be US$2.60 to US$2.80 and now is between US$3.70 and US$4.00.

Mercedes Aguilar, owner of a store, details that the nicaraguan quesillo is selling it at US$3.00 and US$2.90 for quesillo de hila.

The four ounces of queso duro blando cost around US$1.60 and US$1.40, and US$0.50 for a small portion.

Due to these price increases, the President of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, carried out verifications of establishments that sell this product and detailed that, based on a preliminary report, they have detected price stability in different varieties of cream, as well as fresh cheese and cottage cheese.

He also detailed that quesos duro blando and duro viejo are "some of the products on which they are going to initiate procedures, in order to deduce the responsibilities of the suppliers.

He also commented that the institution activates administrative processes based on consumer complaints against suppliers that abruptly increase prices.

He also indicated that these situations can be "prosecuted for abusive practices, sanctioned with fines of up to 500 minimum wages".

Last year, 40 suppliers were sanctioned with fines totaling more than US$140 thousand. The call that the Defensoría del Consumidor is making, always, to the population is to denounce through 910 or WhatsApp 7844-148.
