US$50, US$100 and US$150 will be the possible new costs for traffic fines in the country

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP), submitted to the Legislative Assembly a decree containing reforms to the Law of Land Transportation, Transit and Road Safety; which has the purpose of regulating new infractions to the law, technological procedural mechanisms for its determined accreditation.

According to the decree shown in Article 117 of said Law, traffic and road safety infractions are classified as light, serious and very serious in which there will be changes such as an increase in the value of each infraction.

Each fine will be around US$50 for minor fines, such as: not carrying a vehicle registration card, driving with a foreign license after the established time, driving with an expired license or without it, driving with flat or bad tires, among others.

For serious violations US$100, such as, for example: not yielding the right of way to emergency vehicles when their sirens and rotating light signals are activated, increasing speed when another vehicle tries to pass, and refusing to present documents to the corresponding authorities.

Very serious violations are equivalent to US$150 for: driving at a higher speed than the legal speed limit, competing with another vehicle, not respecting the legal lane when turning left, transporting people for commercial purposes without the corresponding permit.

Fines for traffic violations, which are paid within 5 working days from the day following the notification of the infraction, will benefit from a 50% reduction of the amount of the respective fine.
