Written by Evelyn Alas

The increase in formal employment is among the most outstanding achievements. Data from the Instituto Salvadoreño del Seguro Social (ISSS) indicate that there are 962,575 workers registered on the payroll. This number had not been observed before and shows how the employer sector is interested in betting on the country.

This has allowed Social Security coverage to reach 2.02 million people, including contributors and beneficiaries.

A decisive change to achieve this is the intermediation role of the Ministry of Labor to connect employers with people looking for a job. In 2002, this work of the Ministry led to the placement of 15,120 people, of the approximately 60,000 who managed to join the formal sector in 2022.

Another sector that has found the necessary support to grow is foreign trade. According to information from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR), it was possible to reach historic amounts of income from the sale of salvadoran goods. At the end of that year, the country obtained foreign currency for US$7,115 million from this activity. As of april 2023, there are 1,722 companies exporting, 4.8% more than in 2022.

Likewise, El Salvador finally managed to grow in energy generation and, up to march, reports an increase of more than 1,800% in the sale of energy to other countries. This transaction is possible because the country achieved self-sufficiency and is able to produce the energy it needs in the territory.

During the different crises faced by El Salvador and other countries, the Central Government acted to take care of the family economy, both during the pandemic and the period of high international inflation.
