El Salvador receives permits to build Bitcoin City Airport

Written by Evelyn Alas

According to cryptocity media, the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA)  assured that it has already received the environmental permits for the construction of the Pacific Airport. At the same time, they are moving forward with the design of the new terminal in the east of the country. The new station is part of the Bitcoin City project to be developed in El Salvador.

The site will become the most ambitious regional development undertaken by that country. It will be a new environmentally conscious urbanism because Bitcoin City generates its own energy from the volcano located on the perimeter. The president of the institution, Federico Anliker, indicated that the technical aeronautical part and the international permits for the establishment of the terminal are being analyzed.

"We are talking to airlines to become our clients, so that they can operate, and the important thing is that we are walking and going in the right direction. The airport will be located in the Loma Larga canton, in the municipality of La Unión, and will be built in phases. During the pandemic, prefeasibility, feasibility, geotechnical and resettlement studies were carried out".

The construction is part of the group of emblematic projects of the Central Government that it even promised during the electoral campaign. The expectation is that the airport station will mobilize one million passengers and connect with Bitcoin City. However, a group of landowners from the villages of Condadillo and Flor de Mangle, La Unión, said they do not agree with the project.

After a four-month period of these expressions, Anliker assured that some 52 families, who live in the area designated for the construction of the project, are "extremely happy" because they have been given "a much more dignified option" to live in.

Objectives

CEPA's website details that the Central Government seeks to turn the eastern zone into a pole of economic development, encourage the growing demand of passengers from abroad, develop international tourism and activate the Port of La Union.

The official information states that last march 9, 2020, the official launching of the International Public Bidding for the elaboration of the Feasibility Studies for the Pacific Airport Project in the eastern zone of the country took place.

During the process 44 international companies showed interest, of which 30 pre-qualified and finally 11 companies submitted their technical and economic offers.

As a final result, the contract was awarded to the UDP CONSORCIO PEYCO - ALBEN 4000 consortium, which is developing the feasibility study for the construction of the Pacific Airport in the eastern zone of El Salvador, whose term of elaboration is 300 calendar days.

The money for the work

In june 2022, the Legislative Assembly gave the green light to the reform of the Budget Law 2022. It was to add $12 million to the Public Works and Transportation branch. Thus, the first phase of the airport could be executed. It adds 6.3 million that the Ministry of Finance requested to the Legislative Body to allocate the amount to previous construction expenses.

Both Bitcoin City and the airport were designed by mexican architect Fernando Romero. The artist was recently awarded by the creativity and design platform LOOP. The instance allows the participation of professionals working in different sectors.

The PEYCO-ALBEN 4,000 consortium delivered the studies carried out for the construction of the Pacific Airport in the eastern part of the country.

Among the most outstanding positive impacts of the report are the improvement of living conditions, development of tourism in the area, connectivity, job creation, among others. It was also revealed that the airport will generate close to 4,700 jobs in the first year and 50,000 jobs in 10 years.
