Treasury will grant amnesty to pay taxes

The minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, informed in a press conference that he presented today to the Legislative Assembly (AL), a Ley Especial y Transitoria que otorga Facilidades para el Cumplimiento Voluntario de Obligaciones Tributarias y Aduaneras, known as tax amnesty, which seeks to forgive fines, interest and surcharges when paying taxes.

If the Legislative Assembly approves the decree in the next few days and it is published in the Official Gazette, individuals will have until december 10, 2021 to comply with the voluntary payment of their tax and customs obligations.

Likewise, he said that all those declarations that have not been filed until june 30, 2021 apply, payment may be made in installments or by paying 10% as indicated in the decree. "It applies to customs infractions and those of the General Directorate of Internal Taxes", said the minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya.

The minister also indicated that he will seek to recover and audit the US$280 million granted to the mayors' offices in 2020 during the quarantine by Covid-19, he also said that they have empowered the Dirección General de Impuestos (DGII) and the Dirección General de Aduanas (DGA), for the recovery of these funds.

In addition, the minister said that, in september 2018, at the initiative of Congressman Rodolfo Parker, Decree 127 was issued, which slashed US$280 million, around 368 cases.

Also at the conference were the director general of Taxes, Marlón Vásquez and the Director General of Customs, Samadhy Martínez.

"At the level of Internal Taxes we have 313 cases that due to the validity of the decree that were sent to the file...equivalent to US$139 million, 50% were in their final stage", said the Director General of Impuestos Internos de Hacienda, Marlon Vásquez.

"In Customs alone we have 55 cases closed by this Legislative Decree...22% are of large taxpayers", said the general director of Customs, Samadhy Martinez.
