Learn how to maximize your resources

Written by Evelyn Alas

It is important to note that maximizing your resources does not mean not using the product or service, but learning how to use it in a better way to get the most out of it.

Fixed telephone companies usually have low rate schedules, which mean that the price per minute is cheaper than the regular rate. Check with your provider what these schedules are, what type of dials is included in these rates and what the conditions for accessing them are.

There are currently a large number of "intelligent" household appliances on the market. One of their characteristics is that they perform the same function with fewer resources. For example, there are washing machines that use less water in each load, compared to a traditional model.

If the purchase price is high, analyze if it could be compensated with the reduction of monthly payments for water service.

Before buying electrical and electronic appliances, we suggest you check that they have an energy-saving label. This means that the equipment is efficient and designed to operate with less energy consumption. Both smart and energy-saving appliances, in addition to reducing your water or electricity consumption costs, contribute to the care of the environment.

Inside the home, there is equipment that must remain properly closed in order to function optimally. Such is the case of the refrigerator, microwave and gas oven. In the case of refrigerators and microwave ovens, make sure that all the door seals are in good condition.

If there is any heat or cold leakage, the equipment will require more energy to perform its function, increasing your electric bill.

The gas oven is a similar case; when cooking something, avoid constantly opening the door. This way you will keep the heat concentrated and less gas will be required to achieve full cooking.

If you have a garden, try to water it in the afternoon or evening. This way, the water does not evaporate so easily, giving the plants time to absorb it and avoiding wasting more water.

Stand-by: keep electrical appliances in "stand-by" mode.

You may think that one appliance won't increase your electric bill, but consider all the appliances in your home and the expense will be significant. Once you have finished using your equipment, it is best to unplug it. Your finances and the environment will thank you.
