Tips to spend less if you are on vacation

Written by Evelyn Alas

Traveling on vacation doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. We give you tips so you spend less and don't end up coming home not knowing what you spent your money on.

Buy transportation in advance. Bus seats are usually cheaper if you buy them online, and flights are more affordable weeks or months in advance.

Use public transportation. Cabs can be a big expense, so it may be a good idea to find out about fares and how public transportation works before you get to your destination.

Plan your food expenses. Budgeting and planning can help you avoid surprises due to overspending. Another useful tip may be to find a house with a kitchen through AirBnB to avoid going out to eat.

Consider the exchange rate or bank fees. If you are leaving the country, it is best to find out if there are commissions at ATMs, the local currency, or if there are controls and restrictions when exchanging currencies.

Carry cash. Don't rely on cards or digital payments; cash gets you out of tight spots and emergencies, especially away from home.

Carry a reusable water bottle. A refillable bottle is more environmentally friendly and cheaper than buying disposable plastic bottles.
