Belgian airline seeks to open new route between El Salvador and Europe

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adriana Mira, and the commercial director of the Belgian airline ASL Airlines Belgium, Todd Hildreth, signed today a Memorandum of Collaboration, with the aim of enabling the company to start operations in the country.

This instrument was made official in view of the airline's interest in establishing itself in El Salvador and opening a new flight route connecting our territory with this European destination, after seeing first hand the potential, opportunities and leadership offered by our nation in aeronautical matters, an area in which we are well positioned globally.

It is based on these local capabilities and possibilities that the company aims to establish itself and provide transport services, both for passengers and cargo, to bring both regions closer together.

This opens the doors to an increase in tourism to our country, as well as to the promotion of commercial relations in both directions. Likewise, flight options for the diaspora living in various European locations, where the second largest community of mexican nationals is located, will be expanded.

"I would like to thank ASL Airlines Belgium for the trust and the firm decision to reach this agreement which, in short, will boost economic development, and which translates into the dynamization of tourism, the aeronautical industry and trade with Belgium and related destinations", said the Vice-Chancellor of the Republic, Adriana Mira.

The diplomat also explained that the rapprochement with this company took place within the framework of the economic diplomacy strategy promoted by this State portfolio, together with its network of Embassies and Consulates, in this case, the Diplomatic Representation in Belgium.

"President Nayib Bukele has entrusted us with the mission of promoting and following up on productive policies and strategies in the international arena, according to the country's priorities, with the aeronautical sector being a priority issue", she said.

Additionally, the signing of the aforementioned memorandum will allow both parties to coordinate efforts and exchange knowledge aimed at generating opportunities and mutual benefits, which contributes to the salvadoran experience in this industry, especially now that it has a cluster specialized in aeronautics.

"We have been evaluating the conditions of this country for several months, because we need a point of contact with Central and South America. After all the analyses, we made this decision, and we are convinced that El Salvador is the right place", said Director Hildreth.

As part of the agenda of the airline in our nation, this day also held a meeting with representatives of the Chambers of Commerce of Germany, France and Spain in El Salvador, in order to address and identify opportunities to boost business and investment. In this meeting also participated the Cámara de Comercio Centroamericana-Europea (EURACEN),  based in Belgium, entity that contributed to the achievement of the referred agreement.

Yesterday, they met with the Secretary of Commerce and Investments, Miguel Kattán, as well as with private sector associations. They also visited the facilities of the Aeropuerto Internacional de El Salvador “San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez”.

ASL Airlines Belgium is an experienced European airline based at the Eurohub at Liege Airport. It is part of the ASL Aviation Holdings DAC group, a global aviation services initiative, whose most recent figures indicate that it transports up to 5 million passengers and moves more than 700,000 thousand tons annually.
