The preliminary draft budget for fiscal year 2025 amounts to US$9,663 million, of which the Ministry of Education has requested US$1,535 million, representing the largest allocation in its history.
The proposal prioritizes six key areas: infrastructure, early childhood, teacher training, renewed curriculum, technology, and health and nutrition. Arturo Martínez, the Ministry’s financial director, highlighted an increase of US$6.8 million in public investment by 2025, focused on infrastructure and human development.
US$297 million will be allocated for infrastructure, with which 219 educational centers will be improved under the Mi Nueva Escuela model and 278 schools and 15 early childhood centers will be equipped with furniture. This effort seeks to raise national educational standards.
In early childhood, US$90.7 million will be allocated to benefit 2,300 children in Language Immersion Nests and support 10,000 students at risk of exclusion. Also, 22 Centros de Orientación y Recursos (COR) will be strengthened to expand psycho-pedagogical support.
Teacher training will receive US$24.4 million, earmarked for specialized diagnostics, an educational portal for in-service teachers, and a 50% strengthening of the technical training team. This area seeks to professionalize the system’s educators. The renewed curriculum will receive US$69.2 million to design 21st century educational programs, especially in technical areas such as health, agriculture, electricity, logistics, and tourism, benefiting technical high school students.
Educational technology will have a budget of US$136 million. This will be used to bring internet to 100% of public schools and deliver 216,925 tablets and 125,000 Chromebooks to elementary and high school students.
In addition, the plan includes US$114 million for the Universidad de El Salvador, guaranteeing its operation and enabling improvements to its infrastructure and academic programs. According to Martínez, this investment reaffirms the government’s commitment to education as a driver of development.
