El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly approved a $235 million loan with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to finance the Intelligent and Programa de Salud Inteligente e Integral (PROSINT). This project seeks to improve healthcare in the country, especially in non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension, through a physical and digital management model.
Of the funds approved, US$50 million will go towards the development of a Digital Health Model, while US$142.35 million will strengthen health resilience and expand specialized coverage. In addition, US$23.80 million will be invested in improving the network of emergency response and support services.
US$9.35 million will be allocated to strengthen health institutions, and another US$9.5 million will be focused on program administration, evaluation, and audits. This comprehensive approach seeks to optimize the country’s health services, benefiting both the institutions and the population.
The program also includes the construction, expansion, and remodeling of health centers, including Centros de Atención de Enfermedades No Transmisibles (CENTs) and specialized units for the care of women. These improvements seek to strengthen the health infrastructure and increase accessibility to specialized services.
PROSINT includes conducting three national surveys on health, chronic noncommunicable diseases and mental health. The National Health Institute will also be strengthened, thus consolidating the integral approach of the salvadoran health system.
