Three young salvadorans won third place in the Innovation category during the grand final of the Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025, one of the most important student competitions in the world in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT).

The salvadoran team Deep Blue SV, formed by Gabriela Rodríguez, Luis Alberto del Cid and Anthony Ortega, presented the NestGuard project, an innovative proposal that combines IoT, artificial intelligence and Huawei cloud services to protect hawksbill turtle nests off the coast of El Salvador. Guided by Professor Karens Medrano of Universidad Don Bosco , the students developed a system that collects real-time data through specialized sensors, processes it in the cloud, and presents it through a mobile application. In addition, NestGuard promotes community participation through environmental education and local employment, constituting a scalable model of technological conservation.

The global finals of this edition took place in Shenzhen, China, with 179 teams from 48 countries and regions participating, selected from more than 210,000 students and instructors from over 2,000 universities in more than 100 countries. This ninth edition of the competition reached an unprecedented scale and reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to the development of young talent globally.

During the closing ceremony, Ritchie Peng, director of Huawei’s ICT Strategy and Business Development Department, noted:
“To achieve the goal of learning through competition and inspiring innovation through competition, we have continuously evolved the design of the themes. The Practice competition is aligned with our vision of a smart world by 2030 and motivates students to master cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence. The Innovation competency focuses on green development and digital inclusion, motivating to solve real challenges in sectors such as agriculture, health and education through ICT”.
In addition, Huawei organized during the event the AI Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, where international experts discussed the transformative role of artificial intelligence in education. Huawei also presented the new AI capabilities integrated into its Huawei ICT Academy education platform, which optimize teaching and learning for teachers and students.

With initiatives such as this global competition, Huawei continues to support the strengthening of digital talent in El Salvador, promoting real opportunities for young Salvadorans to lead innovation and actively participate in the digital transformation of the country.
