The minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, participated in the first Association Council at Ministerial Level between the European Union (EU) and the countries of Central America, a platform created to strengthen political dialogue, boost cooperation and promote trade and investment between the two regions. The meeting was held in Brussels, Belgium, and marked a key step in the relaunching of bi-regional relations.

During his speech, Hill Tinoco reaffirmed El Salvador’s commitment to building a forward-looking strategic alliance. “Strengthening political dialogue, deepening cooperation and boosting trade and investment are essential pillars for building a resilient partnership”, said the salvadoran foreign minister.
The Association Council was convened as part of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union, in force since 2013, and brought together foreign ministers and senior representatives from both regions. The agenda included key issues such as sustainability, economic development, security, and democratic governance. The need to intensify joint efforts in the face of emerging geopolitical challenges was also highlighted.

According to an official communiqué from the European Union, both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation on climate change, environmental degradation, and ocean protection. They also pledged to work together to strengthen regional security, combat organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms trafficking and illicit environmental products, as well as to comprehensively manage migration.
This historic ministerial meeting opens new opportunities for Central America and consolidates a common working framework with the European Union, aimed at sustainable development, respect for human rights and the strengthening of trade relations, which represents a valuable opportunity for El Salvador and the region.
