The initiative to modernize the port of Acajutla and reactivate the port of La Unión has received strong support from the Salvadoran export sector. Silvia Cuéllar, President of the Corporación de Exportadores de El Salvador (Coexport), described the project as “positive”, noting that it will boost domestic production and international trade. This modernization is possible thanks to the investment of US$1.615 million by the Turkish company YILPORT Holding Inc. as part of phase 3 of the Economic Plan.
Cuéllar emphasized that the modernization of the port of Acajutla, with the new venture called Unión Portuaria del Pacífico, will be key to tripling its capacity. This port, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, will allow a more efficient movement of goods, which is vital for the export sector and production in general.
In line with Coexport, the Asociación Salvadoreña de Industriales (ASI) and the Cámara Americana de Comercio de El Salvador (AmCham) have also shown their support for this initiative. Carmen Aída Muñoz, Executive Director of AmCham, pointed out that private investment in port infrastructure is fundamental for the country’s development and competitiveness in the global market.
Likewise, the reactivation of the port of La Unión has also been well received by the different sectors. It will open new opportunities, avoiding dependence on ports in other countries in the region and facilitating the exploration of new international markets for salvadoran exporters.
Trade associations agree that this modernization will not only benefit El Salvador, but could turn the country into a logistic bridge for the region, enhancing its role in international trade and strengthening the local economy.
