A group of 15 salvadorans was selected this week to travel to Costa Rica under the Labor Migration Program promoted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, led by Minister Rolando Castro. The beneficiaries will depart with the guarantee of reliable employers, good salaries, and official contracts that allow them to maintain ties with their families thanks to the program’s circular nature: they work in the partner country and then return, being able to repeat the cycle depending on their performance and family needs.
This process avoids stigmatization and promotes the dignity of salvadoran workers abroad. “They travel under conditions similar to those of any official or diplomat”, explained Castro, who emphasized the importance of promoting savings, exemplary behavior, and the national pride that these young people bring to Costa Rica.
Benefits, security, and international support
The selected candidates will work primarily in the transportation sector in San José for an initial period of one year, with renewable contracts. The agreement allows full access to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, payment of housing and food, and decent working conditions under international law. The application process is completely digital and free, through the Ministry of Labor’s platform. It requires the creation of an email account, registration, and uploading of personal documents and family information. Each candidate’s profile is analyzed based on available offers, without costs or intermediaries, ensuring transparency and security.
Remarks by the beneficiaries and the Costa Rican ambassador
Carlos Giovanni Sarabia Portillo, one of the beneficiaries, shared his experience: “Leaving your family is a great sacrifice, but the reward will be positive. I am proud to represent El Salvador through my work in the transportation sector, and I appreciate the support of the Ministry of Labor at every stage of the process”.
The Costa Rican ambassador to El Salvador, Lina Eugenia Ajoy Rojas, reaffirmed the positive impact of the project: “Today, 15 salvadoran citizens are opening a new chapter in their lives. They are not only moving physically, but are also gaining an opportunity for growth and Central American connection. They will enrich our culture and society, and I wish them every success in this endeavor”.
Cecilia Ramírez, national coordinator of the IOM program in El Salvador, was recognized for her institutional support, which is key to the success of the contingent and to continuing to facilitate safe opportunities for hundreds of salvadorans.
