Mayor Gustavo Acevedo, together with minister of Public Works Romeo Rodriguez, kicked off construction of the new Central Market by laying the first stone, a project that marks a turning point in the recovery of the city’s main supply center.
Santa Ana experienced a historic moment with the laying of the first stone of the new Central Market, a project that marks the beginning of a new stage in the recovery of one of the most important symbols of the city’s economy and identity. During the official ceremony, Mayor Gustavo Acevedo shared a message focused on hope, unity, and the transformation of the municipality.

“Today we are not laying a stone; today we are igniting hope”, said the mayor before merchants, authorities, and residents who gathered to witness the start of the project, considered one of the most eagerly awaited by the people of Santa Ana after the fire in 2021 that destroyed the old market.

The mayor recalled that for more than a century, the Central Market was the commercial heart of Santa Ana, a place where entire generations built their livelihoods. However, he said that years of neglect weakened the infrastructure, until the fire marked a turning point for the city.
The symbolic act was led by the mayor, together with the minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, deputies from the Legislative Assembly, and representatives from the World Bank, formally giving way to the start of this mega-project.

The modern building will benefit thousands of merchants and users, who will have a dignified, safe, and functional space to carry out their economic activities, strengthening the reactivation of commerce in the Historic Center.

According to the mayor, the new Central Market will be a milestone in the history of the municipality. “It is not just a construction project that is beginning: it is the rebirth of a symbol that lives on in the memory of the people of Santa Ana. We knocked on doors and never stopped believing in the transformation of Santa Ana. There were doubts and criticism, but today the answer is before your eyes: not with speeches or excuses, but with facts”, he said.

The project is the result of coordinated efforts between the government of President Nayib Bukele and the municipality of Santa Ana Centro, with the support of international organizations. The project seeks to leave a legacy and revive the municipality’s economy, positively impacting the lives of thousands of families.
The ceremony closed with a message that summed up the spirit of the project: “Santa Ana does not retreat, Santa Ana rises”.
