The head of the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), Daniel Álvarez, met with Abdullah Alsaif, general manager of Credit Operations of the Saudi Fund for Development (FSD), to analyze technical and legal aspects related to the financing of the new Biogas Electricity Generation Plant to be built on the Acelhuate River. This plant is part of the efforts to improve sanitation and energy infrastructure in El Salvador.
The Saudi Fund for Development recently signed a financing agreement for US$83 million to make this project a reality. The plant will not only produce energy with biogas, but will also make a significant contribution to environmental sanitation by treating 70% of the wastewater from the San Salvador Metropolitan Area.
The project will be located in San Salvador, in an area covering the districts of Ciudad Delgado and Cuscatancingo, and represents the first large-scale intervention to clean up several key rivers, such as the Urbina, Tomayate, Acelhuate and Lempa. These rivers feed important reservoirs in the country, so their cleanup is vital for water supply.
This project will directly benefit more than 1.2 million salvadorans, improving both water quality and the living conditions of the inhabitants of these areas. In addition, it will contribute to the generation of clean energy through biogas, which also promotes environmental sustainability in the country.
With the implementation of this project, El Salvador takes an important step towards the development of a cleaner and more efficient infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s commitment to protecting the environment and improving the living conditions of its population.
