The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has publicly denounced the disproportionate increase in the cost of business licenses in San Salvador Centro. Through his social platforms, the president criticized this measure adopted by the mayor’s office, arguing that it goes against the government’s policy of economic growth and job creation.

Since the beginning of his administration, Bukele has maintained a stable fiscal policy, avoiding tax increases and even eliminating tax burdens such as the CESC. However, the increase in municipal license fees puts at risk the stability of small and medium entrepreneurs, who could be forced to close their businesses due to high operating costs.

The president emphasized that the country’s economic development cannot be sustained if city halls implement measures that stifle business owners. “We cannot expect economic growth if municipalities start closing businesses simply because they cannot afford to pay excessive licenses”, he stated in his message.
Bukele demanded the immediate reversal of the increases and the reimbursement of the undue charges to those affected. He also warned that, if this situation is not corrected, his government will promote legislation to regulate and prevent these abuses nationwide, ensuring an enabling environment for business development.
