For the second consecutive year, the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM)deployed nationwide more than one thousand vector control assistants, supported by prison inmates, to implement the National Fumigation Plan against the mosquito that transmits dengue, zika and chikungunya.

The mission, which will last for 8 months, aims to raise awareness among the population about the elimination of mosquito breeding sites, carry out clean-up days, destroy the proliferation of mosquitoes and fumigation.



The first phase of the plan includes the simultaneous deployment in 32 districts of the country, 19 of which correspond to the department of San Salvador, including the capital. The departmental capitals of: Ahuachapán, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, Chalatenango, Cojutepeque, Santa Tecla, Zacatecoluca, San Francisco Gotera, San Miguel, San Vicente, and Usulután; in addition to the districts of llobasco in Cabañas and Santa Rosa de Lima in La Unión.

Initially, 500 spray pumps, 80 pick-up trucks, 65 trucks of 15 to 4 tons and 23 buses will be used. In addition, 5,000 quintals of abate, 7,400 barrels of fumigating mixture, and 2,560 gallons of bleach.



Víctor Jiménez, representative of the Directorate of Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM), highlighted the importance of the National Fumigation Plan as a key initiative to protect the health of salvadorans. In his speech, he noted that, for the second consecutive year, the Government of President Nayib Bukele reinforces its commitment to the prevention of diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya. In addition, he mentioned that the deployment of brigades will cover approximately eight months of continuous work in the territory, with the objective of reducing the incidence rates of these diseases. He recalled that last year more than 1.5 million homes were fumigated in the 262 districts of the country, benefiting more than 5 million salvadorans.


He also informed that the plan will start in 32 districts, prioritizing those with the highest risk, including 19 in the department of San Salvador and several departmental capitals. For the execution of these tasks, there will be a robust logistical team, which includes more than a thousand members of the vector control team, 500 thermal fogging pumps, more than 80 pickups, 65 trucks and 20 buses for the transportation of personnel. In addition, he mentioned the availability of essential supplies such as 5,000 quintals of abate, 7,400 barrels of fumigation mixture and 2,500 gallons of bleach for cleaning houses. With this coordinated effort, he assured that the Directorate of Municipal Works reaffirms its commitment to the health and well-being of the population.



The personnel will have the appropriate equipment such as: gloves, masks, glasses and cleaning articles such as: rakes and shovels, and bags.

The DOM requests the cooperation of the population so that its fumigation brigades can enter: homes, communities, hamlets, cantons, health units, stores, churches, markets and vacant lots.

Last year, the institution achieved a coverage of more than 1.5 million homes, benefiting more than 6 million salvadorans.
