Tourism in El Salvador reached record figures in 2024, achieving a 14% increase in the number of visitors to national parks compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the consolidation of the country as an attractive tourist destination for both foreigners and locals, thanks to the diversification of its offer and the growing security in its main destinations.
Almost 4 million international tourists visited El Salvador last year, mainly from the United States (39%), Guatemala (26%) and Honduras (16%). According to data from the Salvadoran Tourism Institute (ISTU), this influx positions the country as an emerging reference on the world tourism map, standing out for its natural and cultural wealth.
The Puerto de La Libertad Tourist Complex was one of the most visited destinations in 2024. This space combines attractions such as the Sunset Park, the Sea Market and the new Tourist Pier, along with its beaches internationally recognized for their ideal waves for surfing. The high demand in the area has led to the planning of new accommodations to meet the growing flow of visitors.
In addition, the Historic Center of San Salvador has become the second most popular tourist site in the country, thanks to its recent renovations that have revitalized the urban area. Other notable destinations include Cerro Verde Natural Park, Balboa Park and Puerta del Diablo, which have also seen a significant increase in the number of tourists.
This tourism boom is not only limited to foreign visitors. During 2024, the national parks managed by the ISTU received 12 million people, a figure that includes both local and international tourists. This number demonstrates the interest of Salvadorans in rediscovering the country’s attractions.
