This thursday began the application of photo fines to violators of the traffic law circulating in Monseñor Romero Boulevard, the first point where the Government of President Nayib Bukele implements this system, which will gradually expand to other areas of the country.
The head of the Ministry of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez Herrera, informed that the systems were activated at zero hours of this january 9 and have begun to detect infractions, ranging from speeding, overweight cargo transport and inadequate use of the lane for heavy transport.
“At this hour we have already had 12 people who have been fined, 12 drivers sanctioned for driving over 90 kilometers per hour”, detailed the official, who went to the area together with the head of the Vice-Ministry of Transport VMT, Nelson Reyes, to supervise the operation of the system. The minister pointed out, however, that the 12 people violated up to that moment was a much lower number than the one registered before the announcement of the implementation of the photomultations on this road.
“Before the start of the photomultas, in 24 hours we had 2,400 drivers breaking the law on this road. After the announcement of the start of this system, between monday and wednesday, we had 392 drivers on average daily approximately who were violating the traffic laws”, detailed the official, highlighting the success of the information campaign on the start of this mechanism, which has been gradually decreasing the number of violators.
Vice-minister Nelson Reyes confirmed that, as of 7:00 a.m., 12 people had been fined through the photomulta system, all of them private vehicles speeding. Within 24 hours, these drivers will receive a notification via email or text message about the fine imposed, including the image and data supporting the sanction, he assured, adding that people will have the opportunity to contest these fines.
“The objective of this is not collecting, the objective is not to impose sanctions, the objective is not for people to take a fine. The objective is, precisely, that nobody drives at excessive speed, that we respect traffic regulations, that everyone is safer on the streets”, said the vice minister.
