The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced today, during COP30, a new agreement with the Governments of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway that will unlock US$800 million in additional lending capacity for the regional programs Amazonia Siempre and América en el Centro. This financial guarantee represents a significant step toward expanding investments in energy security, climate resilience, and inclusive growth in the Amazonian countries, including Suriname, and in Central America.
The mechanism will allow the IDB to strengthen financing for the protection of key ecosystems, sustainable development, and community projects, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations have better opportunities for adaptation and economic well-being.
During the announcement, the IDB highlighted the presence of the President of Suriname, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, who participated representing the beneficiary countries and reaffirmed the region’s commitment to high-impact environmental initiatives.
The organization emphasized that this agreement is a concrete example of how international cooperation can move from vision to implementation: “We are transforming ambition into action” With this financial boost, the IDB is advancing its strategy of sustainable growth, regional integration, and capacity building from the local to the environmental level.
