The Legislative Assembly approved, with 57 votes, a new extension of the state of emergency, which will remain in effect throughout january, as part of the government’s strategy to consolidate the progress made in public security.
During the plenary session, the representatives agreed that the continuation of this measure is key to preserving the climate of tranquility currently prevailing in the country and to preventing criminal organizations from attempting to reorganize. This extension adds to those approved since march 2022, when the country was experiencing a serious escalation of violence.
During the legislative debate, it was noted that the state of emergency is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic and that its application has strengthened the work of security institutions, providing them with legal tools to confront gangs and reclaim territories that for years were under the control of organized crime.

Legislative authorities indicated that the impact of this policy is reflected in the sustained reduction of homicides and the decrease in crimes that directly affected communities. They also emphasized that the combination of the state of emergency with the Plan Control Territorial has been crucial in guaranteeing the life and safety of the population.
According to official data, since the implementation of these measures, more than 90,000 people linked to criminal organizations, including gang leaders, have been captured. This is further supported by the record of recent months with a high number of days without homicides, as well as more than 1,000 days without murders accumulated since june 2019.

The legislators affirmed that these results support the decision to maintain the state of emergency, considering that its continuation allows progress toward sustained security and creates favorable conditions for the country’s social and economic development.
The Legislative Assembly reiterated that it will continue to support the State’s actions aimed at strengthening citizen security and guaranteeing peace throughout the national territory.
