The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, ordered all municipalities in the country to eliminate any fee, fine, license, permit or tax implemented since may 1 last year. The deadline to comply with this measure expires today, Monday, at midnight, as announced in his Facebook account.
Bukele warned that municipalities that do not comply with the provision will be denounced before the Fiscalía General de la República for the crime of extortion. “I hope that 100% of the municipal councils comply with this instruction”, said the president, making it clear that there will be no exceptions.

The President emphasized that this decision seeks to protect businessmen, especially micro, small and medium-sized ones, who are fundamental for the economic growth of the country. He pointed out that financial harassment of these sectors will not be tolerated under his government.
Last saturday, Bukele had already warned about possible sanctions for municipalities that apply arbitrary charges. On that occasion, he assured that his administration will not allow administrative abuses that affect the productive sectors.

The President also reiterated his commitment to the economic recovery of El Salvador, arguing that the country suffered decades of corruption and mismanagement that hindered its development. For this reason, he insisted that any measure that harms business activity will be stopped with determination.

So far, not all mayors’ offices have confirmed whether they will comply with the presidential order. It is expected that in the next hours there will be official pronouncements from the municipal governments and the Fiscalía General de la República.
