The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced on his social networks the opening of five new AgroMercados in the eastern region of the country. These new points of sale, located in the departments of La Unión, Morazán, San Miguel and Usulután, seek to expand access to fresh produce at fair prices for communities. According to Bukele, this expansion is part of the commitment to bring these markets to all municipalities in the nation.
The AgroMercados initiative, promoted by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), offers a wide variety of products at affordable prices. In these points, consumers will be able to find from seasonal fruits, to basic products such as bananas, lemons, and celery. Prices, as detailed by MAG, remain low and accessible, with items ranging from US$0.80 to US$1.90, depending on the product and quantity.
Among the seasonal fruits available are lychee, tangerine, Jocote de corono, Granadilla nacional and peach, while products such as banana, lemon and pineapple are available in different presentations to suit the needs of each buyer. The initiative not only seeks to improve the family economy of salvadorans, but also to encourage the consumption of local and fresh products, supporting national producers in their direct marketing.
These new points are open to the public every day from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., offering a convenient and economical alternative to purchase fresh food. Bukele also reminded the public that the Central de Abastos continues to operate monday through saturday, from 2:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., thus complementing the offer of AgroMercados in the country.
With this expansion, it not only seeks to strengthen food security, but also to reduce the economic impact on families, especially in rural areas and areas far from urban centers.
