The minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, informed this may 10 in a press conference that the Los Chorros highway will be reopened to vehicular traffic this sunday, may 11 at 11:00 p.m., after being closed for two weeks due to landslides in the area.

Rodríguez explained that during the cleaning and stabilization of slopes on the Pan-American Highway, specifically in the affected section of Los Chorros, approximately 35,000 cubic meters of material have been removed.
The head of Public Works indicated that the work has shown significant progress and will continue with the objective of mitigating risks. He explained that the load of the mountain has been reduced and that deep drillings of between 20 and 30 meters are being carried out to place active anchors to provide greater safety to the road.

The closure of the road was ordered last april 28, when an avalanche completely blocked all lanes. Although its reopening was initially announced for monday, may 5 at 2:00 a.m., it was postponed. In response, the government decreed free public transportation throughout the country.
The measure caused complications on Monday, when several carriers did not take out their units or did so with delays, generating chaos for hundreds of citizens who depended on public transportation.

In view of this situation, President Nayib Bukele ordered the National Civil Police to arrest the businessmen who did not provide the service. According to the Mesa Nacional de Transporte, at least 16 owners were captured during the week, and the union has requested the Executive to cease the arrests. Meanwhile, the closure of Los Chorros has aggravated traffic in San Salvador and surrounding municipalities, where alternate routes have suffered high congestion.
