El Salvador closed 2024 with a total of 3,956,794 international visitors, with tourists from Guatemala and the United States standing out, with 34% each, according to Eny Aguiñada, President of the Instituto Salvadoreño de Turismo (ISTU). These data reflect a growing interest in the Central American country, which has positioned itself as an attractive destination for travelers from the region and beyond.
Honduras follows as the third country of origin with 18% of tourists, while the remaining 14% come from various parts of the world. This geographic profile underscores El Salvador’s relevance as a connecting point for the region, especially for neighboring countries seeking to explore its cultural, natural and adventure offerings.
Tourist arrivals to El Salvador have been characterized by a strong preference for overland travel, with 60% of visitors crossing the border by road. This figure highlights the country’s accessibility for travelers from nearby countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, who opt for this means due to its proximity and ease of transportation.
40% of tourists arrived by air, which also reflects the dynamism of the airline industry in the region, facilitating access to international travelers. The presence of regional airlines and better air connections with other countries have been key factors in the increase of tourists choosing to travel by air.
ISTU President Eny Aguiñada said that the government will continue working to consolidate these advances in 2025, with the goal of continuing to promote tourism as a vital source of economic development and national pride. “Our commitment remains firm, ensuring that tourism is a fundamental key to the country’s growth”, said Aguiñada, confident that El Salvador will continue to be a preferred destination for international tourists.
