El Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) reports an 8.5% decrease in the number of traffic fatalities compared to the same period last year. According to Vice Minister Nelson Reyes, this reduction is the result of ongoing prevention efforts, roadside checks, and road safety education campaigns conducted by authorities throughout the country.

As part of the new regulations to strengthen safety, legislation mandates the use of certified helmets for both motorcycle drivers and passengers. Additionally, the use of child restraint systems in private vehicles is now mandatory, a measure aimed at protecting children’s lives and reducing risks in the event of accidents.

Vice Minister Reyes said that in areas where photo enforcement cameras have been implemented, such as bulevar Monseñor Romero and the Comalapa Highway, a 50% reduction in traffic accidents has been recorded. The official stressed that the goal of the fines is not revenue collection, but to persuade and save lives, as well as improve the flow of vehicular traffic.
VMT statistics also reflect a 5.5% decrease in arrests for reckless driving compared to the same period in 2024. According to Reyes, this decrease demonstrates the positive impact of enforcement and public awareness campaigns, especially in areas where road infrastructure work is underway, such as the underground cabling in the Historic Center of San Salvador, which has involved temporary closures and detours.

The Vice Minister also reported that underground cabling work is currently being carried out in the Historic Center of San Salvador, which has resulted in street closures and temporary changes to public transportation routes. Reyes explained that this work is part of the modernization and urban planning process for the capital, and he asked for the public’s understanding while the work is being carried out, which will contribute to improving the safety and aesthetics of the area and road safety education for the youngest children.

With the aim of fostering a road safety culture from childhood, the VMT is promoting the Road Safety Education Park, which travels to various public squares throughout the country. “We want children to become familiar with traffic signs and learn the importance of road safety from an early age”, stated the Deputy Minister, emphasizing that education is a key tool for maintaining the long-term reduction in accidents.
