Movistar El Salvador, in the framework of the Environment Day (June 5th), reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the reduction of its environmental impact by completing its carbon footprint study. This analysis provides the opportunity to improve the company’s efficiency by defining strategies to minimize environmental impact and continue leading environmental initiatives within the country’s telecommunications sector.

“The measurement of our carbon footprint represents our commitment to our customers and to the country to continue innovating, providing the best technology with the least possible environmental impact. We are convinced that we must continue to promote the protection of our natural capital and we are proud to be the first telecommunications company in the country to carry out this study”, said Eduardo Solórzano, Director of Corporate Affairs of Movistar El Salvador.
The year-long study, which ended in december 2024, based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) methodology, analyzed the company’s entire value chain and determined that total emissions amounted to 1,281.67 tons of CO2, setting a precedent for Movistar’s future mitigation strategies for environmental protection.

The report also shows the environmental compensations that the company made in the last two years, focusing on two major projects. The first is the recycling and reuse of more than 100 tons of equipment and electronic waste, among other waste; and the second was the restoration of 350 mangrove seedlings, with advice from the Fundación Empresarial para la Acción Social (FUNDEMAS) and implemented by the Asociación de Desarrollo Comunal de Mujeres de Barra de Santiago (AMBAS).

The company is committed to reducing its emissions and increasing its offsets in the coming years by considering the following:
- Aligning the company’s goals with the country’s priorities.
- Focusing efforts to achieve the goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, for the Climate Action target.
- Following the guidelines of the Autoridad Nacional de Residuos Sólidos ANDRES.

This will allow Movistar to advance in its contribution to the fight against climate change and continue to be a benchmark for good environmental practices in the telecommunications industry in the country.

“In FUNDEMAS we believe in the best version of El Salvador and in the importance of promoting business initiatives that generate a positive impact on the environment and society. The measurement of Movistar El Salvador’s carbon footprint reflects its commitment to identifying its sources of emissions and developing concrete, measurable and constantly improving environmental strategies. We are proud to accompany Movistar in this process, which contributes to the welfare of the country and the promotion of responsible business management”, said Tomás Regalado, president of FUNDEMAS.
