As part of its Shared Value strategy, Walmart de El Salvador reaffirms its commitment to sustainable agriculture and local development through a new initiative that will directly benefit three national agricultural producers, ensuring continuity in the supply of hydroponic cilantro and onion for salvadoran households.
This strategy seeks to generate economic, social, and environmental benefits along the value chain, strengthening the growth of local suppliers and promoting responsible practices that have a positive impact on communities and customers.
All the benefited producers are part of the Tierra Fértil program, a support program for agricultural suppliers that seeks to strengthen productive capacities, from advisory services to infrastructure donations. In this case, Walmart will donate two structures with beds for hydroponic cilantro and one dryer for drying and curing onions to three farmers. These will allow them to improve their cultivation systems, reduce the impact of weather conditions, and ensure a constant production throughout the year for the benefit of them, their families, and all Walmart customers.
As part of this action, Walmart will make an in-kind donation amounting to more than US$101 thousand. This investment seeks to maintain the annual supply of the cilantro crop, strengthening the productive capacities of the farmers.

Thanks to this collaboration, producers Cristian Hernández (Caluco, Sonsonate), Manuel Larín (Juayuga, Sonsonate) and Celio Guillén (San Ignacio, Chalatenango) will implement innovations that will strengthen their farming operations. Cristian Hernández and Manuel Larín will promote the production of hydroponic cilantro in structures designed to minimize rainfall losses and control pests during the dry season. Celio Guillén will have an onion dryer that will allow him to preserve the product and guarantee supply during the critical season.
“At Walmart, we believe in the power of sustainable partnerships. Through our Shared Value strategy and the Tierra Fértil program, we promote the growth of our agricultural suppliers with concrete solutions that strengthen their productivity, improve their quality of life, and ensure fresh and responsible products for our customers. These types of initiatives allow us to move towards a more inclusive and sustainable development model for El Salvador”, said Claudia de Ibáñez, deputy director of Social License at Walmart El Salvador.
Walmart Central America continues to promote direct, sustainable, and responsible commercial relationships with its agricultural suppliers, reaffirming its purpose of contributing to improving the quality of life of salvadoran families, from the farm to the home.
