Movistar El Salvador, a brand operated by General International Telecom (GIT), reaffirms its commitment to sustainability through a series of projects that reflect its mission to connect people and contribute to the development of the country. By 2024, the company will excel in three key areas: environment, education, and equality, generating a positive impact on salvadoran communities.
Leading environmental protection from telecommunications
Movistar El Salvador successfully closed its electronics recycling tour “Cambiá a Verde”, an initiative that collected more than 8,000 pounds of electronic waste in collaboration with the Fundación Empresarial para la Acción Social (FUNDEMAS) and the Cámara Americana de Comercio de El Salvador. This activity was a collective effort with 13 companies that participated in this project, demonstrating their commitment to the country and to fostering a responsible business culture.
Another noteworthy initiative was the restoration of mangroves in Barra de Santiago. In alliance with FUNDEMAS and the Asociación de Desarrollo Comunal de Mujeres de Barra de Santiago, Movistar led the planting of 350 mangrove seedlings in a buffer zone between the marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This project not only contributes to carbon sequestration, estimated at more than 15 tons of CO2, but also promotes biodiversity protection and the economic sustainability of local communities led by women.
In addition, Movistar took a strategic step by initiating the measurement of its carbon footprint, becoming the first company in the telecommunications sector in the country to carry out this study. The results of the measurement will allow it to implement effective strategies to offset its environmental impact, contribute to the fight to reduce the effects of climate change and reaffirm its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions.
Boosting education and the future of the country
Movistar reaffirms its commitment to education through its internship program “Lideramos el Futuro”, which this 2024 welcomed its third generation of students. This program has been an effective bridge between academia and the working world, offering comprehensive training in technological, administrative and digital skills. Participants receive close support, practical workshops, certifications and benefits such as flexible schedules and integration activities.
In parallel, the company consolidated strategic alliances with five prestigious universities: Escuela Mónica Herrera (EMH), Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios (ESEN), Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” (UCA), Universidad Don Bosco (UDB) and the Key Institute. Through these alliances, projects such as sustainability workshops, labor simulations, and professional internships will be developed to strengthen the connection between academic learning and the needs of the labor market.
Committed to equality and social welfare
Movistar took a step forward in the promotion of gender equality by holding the forum “Leadership development for a more equitable future in STEM”, within the framework of the Day of the Girl Child in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This event was held at UDB and included the participation of women leaders in technology, who shared their experiences to inspire more girls and young women to enter technology careers. The activity also highlighted the importance of closing the digital divide in El Salvador, where women face limited access to the Internet and digital skills.
In the social area, the alliance with the Fundación Ayúdame a Vivir has been key to supporting the treatment of children with cancer in the country. More than 125 Movistar employees joined the Movimiento Amarillo program as recurring donors, strengthening the financial sustainability of the foundation. In addition, the company offers exclusive benefits for donors, such as discounts on postpaid plans, reaffirming its commitment to social causes.
“At Movistar El Salvador we believe that every action counts to build a more sustainable, equitable and promising future. Our commitment to the environment, education and equality is part of our DNA as a company, and we will continue working together with our partners to continue being an agent of positive change in El Salvador”, said Eduardo Solórzano, Director of Corporate Affairs of Movistar El Salvador.
These actions reflect the comprehensive approach of Movistar El Salvador, which under the vision of General International Telecom (GIT), seeks to lead in sustainability, education and inclusion, being an agent of positive change, working for a more just and sustainable future.
