Walmart Central America operates nearly 940 stores, 16 distribution centers, and 11 plants in the five countries of the region, representing a significant opportunity for companies that provide innovative solutions.
“Finding innovative ways to save water and electricity consumption and optimally managing recoverable waste are part of a long chain of intertwined actions that make up our sustainability strategy. The partnerships we achieve through this call will give us more tools to advance on our path to becoming a regenerative company”, commented Graciela Chaverri, director of Central Operations.
Sustainability Strategy
Walmart Central America aims to lead the transformation of supply chains into regenerative ones. Therefore, for two decades, it has been implementing projects and solutions to reduce its environmental impact and, in addition, restore natural resources, positively impacting the communities where it operates.

The company has made renewable energy generation one of its pillars, for which it has nearly 140 stores, plants, and distribution centers equipped with solar panels with a generation capacity of approximately 30 million kWh per year, which supplies almost 6% of its electricity needs.
Walmart also promotes electric mobility. It currently has a fleet of nearly 100 electric vehicles and more than 50 electric charging stations for its customers. In addition, our home deliveries in Costa Rica are made with electric vehicles.
In terms of recycling, they managed 52,000 metric tons of cardboard, plastic, and other materials; they also installed 30 recycling stations in key stores so customers can dispose of their recoverable household waste.

The company makes significant efforts with the packaging and products of its own brands, such as Suli, Sabemás, and Great Value. 59% of these products’ packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Furthermore, 95% of the pulp, paper, and wood used in the production of these products is sustainably sourced, as is 85% of the palm oil and 78% of the fish and seafood.
“We are constantly searching for more and better ways to reduce our environmental footprint along three axes: climate change, the circular economy, and natural capital. We thank all the companies that support us in this mission”, Chaverri concluded.
