So far this year, the agency has recovered US$25.2 million for 19,684 consumers, reflecting efficient management and a commitment to transparency and economic justice.
Since june 2019, the total amount recovered has reached US$162.6 million, benefiting more than 588,000 consumers. These results are the fruit of constant monitoring, conciliation, and case resolution, in which the Defensoría has acted against abusive practices, improper charges, and violations of contractual rights.

President Salazar said that, in this year, more than 93,700 consumers have used institutional services, facing situations related to poor quality of products or services (more than 7,000 cases), breach of guarantees (nearly 3,800), breach of contracts (more than 25,500) and improper charges, fees or commissions (more than 35,000).
“We are monitoring a broad spectrum, encompassing not only banks, but also finance companies, cooperatives, and credit unions, as well as many businesses throughout the country. The goal is to prevent any type of illegal withholding or double-applying of payments on credit cards, personal loans, or mortgages”, explained the head of the Defensoría.

In addition, the Defensoría has paid special attention to monitoring advertising, promotions, and offers to ensure that businesses deliver on their promises and that consumers’ rights are not violated. During the month of november, inspections will be intensified in the city of San Miguel, taking advantage of the economic activity generated by the San Miguel Carnival.
As part of its commitment to transparency and consumer education, the institution also offers digital tools such as the Compara platform (https://precompra.defensoria.gob.sv/compara), which allows users to consult and compare prices of more than 1,500 products in different categories, including appliances, beds, and technological items.
With these actions, the institution seeks to ensure that consumers do not fall victim to irregular financial practices, especially during peak commercial seasons like the current one, driven by early Christmas bonuses and year-end promotions.
“We are facing a more empowered citizenry, more aware of their rights and the mechanisms available to defend them. The Defensoría del Consumidor is increasingly accessible to the public, firmly enforcing the legal framework to guarantee a fair and transparent market”, concluded President Ricardo Salazar.
