The Government of El Salvador is advancing in its economic development strategy by strengthening the Comités de Desarrollo Turístico (CDT) in the eastern part of the country, specifically in the departments of San Miguel, La Unión and Morazán. This region is consolidating its position as a key pole for tourism and commercial growth, thanks to sustained investment and public policies aimed at boosting the local economy.

During an official event, authorities from the Ministerio de Turismo (Mitur), the Instituto Salvadoreño de Turismo and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), presented the achievements of the project to strengthen the CDTs. These committees, made up of key players in the tourism and community sector, play a crucial role in local tourism management, promoting the organization and professionalization of the industry as a driver of economic development.
The minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, highlighted that in 2024, 3.9 million visitors were received, of which 1.5 million came to the eastern zone, positioning it as one of the most attractive destinations in the country. This influx, driven by tourists from the United States and Honduras, has contributed to the economic growth of the region by more than 30% in recent years.

Among the main results of the project is the creation of an interactive web map with the area’s tourism offerings, a key tool for making local businesses, services, and attractions visible. There are currently 59 active CDTs nationwide, 22 of which belong to the eastern region, and 13 have directly benefited from this initiative.

With these actions, the Government reaffirms its commitment to generate favorable conditions for the sustainable economic development of eastern El Salvador, promoting tourism as an effective way for growth, inclusion and territorial dynamization since its first mandate in 2019.
