The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador ratified a customs cooperation agreement with the United States, with 58 votes in favor, legislators have given the green light to an agreement that will strengthen the exchange of information and collaboration in customs, which will significantly impact trade and the country’s economy.
The agreement will facilitate the entry and exit of goods, making the processes faster and more secure. This joint effort will not only reduce illegal activities, but will also optimize import and export times for key products such as vehicles, fuels, machinery, textiles, and dairy products, among others.
“Ratifying this agreement is key to combating border crimes and streamlining the process of shipping goods”, said Congressman Walter Aleman, emphasizing the commercial benefits that this alliance will bring. The measure will also benefit El Salvador’s exports, such as coffee, cane sugar and clothing, by guaranteeing a more efficient and transparent customs system.
In operational terms, the agreement establishes an exchange of data that will allow for a more precise control of passengers and cargo. It also provides for the creation of fast and efficient communication channels between the two countries. The United States will contribute to the strengthening of this cooperation by providing advanced technology, such as tablets and mobile devices, which will enable the automation of various processes. In addition, solar panels will be installed in border areas, promoting energy efficiency in customs areas and improving the sustainability of operations.
This agreement also provides for improvements in customs infrastructure, including the refurbishment of border control areas to improve the entry of travelers and products. With these reforms, the clearance time of goods will be reduced, thus facilitating commercial activity and supporting economic dynamism.
The partnership between El Salvador and the United States is an important step toward strengthening bilateral trade and effectively combating border crime, promoting safer and more sustainable economic growth for the country.
