According to the Regional Economic Report 2023-2024 of the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat (SIECA), El Salvador stands out in the region for its strong performance in the textile sector. The country’s most exported products include “sweaters, vests, and similar knitted articles”, which accounted for 6.4% of total exports, reaching a value of US$353.4 million.
In addition to sweaters and vests, exports of “knitted t-shirts and T-shirts” also showed a strong presence, with 6.1% of the total and a value of US$334.6 million. The third most exported product from El Salvador was “plastic packaging articles”, which generated US$294.1 million, representing a 5.3% share.
According to the report the main export products in the CAPARD region were the following: “medical instruments” accounted for 12% of the total and experienced a 20% growth compared to the previous year; ‘coffee’ ranked second with a 6% share, although they registered a 9.1% decrease; and ‘bananas and plantains’ were positioned in third place with 5.9% share, showing an increase of 9.1%. In addition, “orthopedic appliances” reached a share of 2.8% and stood out as the fastest growing product, with a year-on-year rate of 28.4%.
The report also highlights an average year-on-year growth of 7.5% in exports to extra-regional markets between 2018 and 2023, showing the region’s ability to diversify its trade destinations beyond Central America.
This positive export performance reflects the country’s competitiveness and its ability to maintain sustained growth in international markets, boosting national economic development.
