El Salvador celebrates significant savings for its citizens thanks to government initiatives in the agricultural sector. A survey by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) reveals that salvadorans are saving between US$30 and US$35 per visit to these Agromercados. These figures reinforce the government’s commitment to the economic well-being of its citizens, alleviating their financial burden.
According to the MAG, government AgroMercados have registered nearly 8.9 million visits. Likewise, MAG Vice Minister Óscar Domínguez confirmed the significant drop in tomato prices nationwide. This decrease is attributed to a bumper harvest, projecting price stability for the next two months and ensuring supply.

This achievement is a result of the National Production Increase Program, which has promoted the cultivation of more than 1,350 manzanas (approximately 1,350 hectares) and the implementation of 700 protected structures. The program seeks staggered and sustained production to guarantee national supply.

Salvadoran producers are implementing various techniques to ensure the quality and yield of their crops destined for AgroMercados. Óscar Domínguez highlights the use of open-air cultivation with pest- and temperature-resistant, high-yielding hybrids, thus guaranteeing the robustness of their products.

In addition, they are innovating with cultivation in traditional, smart, and greenhouse net houses, allowing them to obtain high-quality harvests. An example of this innovation is their foray into broccoli cultivation and the introduction of a seed for medium-height cultivation, seeking to diversify and optimize production.

All these farmers’ efforts translate into a steady supply of AgroMercados. Currently, their crops arrive primarily through the Soyapango Central Supply Center. However, distribution will expand significantly with the upcoming opening of the Usulután Central Supply Center, allowing more fresh, high-quality produce to reach new regions and a greater number of consumers in El Salvador.

Salvadoran families report tangible benefits to their budgets, a clear sign of the success of the strategies implemented to stabilize basic food basket prices.
