The Treasury Commission has issued a favorable opinion to reform the Income and Expenditure Budget Law, a crucial decision for the Autoridad Nacional de Residuos Sólidos (ANDRES). This reform seeks to allocate up to US$2.3 million to ANDRES, marking a milestone in the country’s environmental management. The initiative will now go to a vote by the full legislature.

These resources will allow ANDRES to fully assume integral waste management and recycling at the national level. The measure is seen as a strategic investment that not only addresses an environmental problem, but also promises significant economic benefits for El Salvador.
The capital injection will facilitate the establishment of efficient mechanisms and procedures for the collection, transportation, and use of waste. This will ensure the continuity and sustainability of services throughout the management chain, from initial collection to final processing.

From an economic perspective, this budget allocation will generate new employment opportunities in the waste management sector. In addition, it will foster the creation of a circular economy, where recyclable materials are reintroduced into the productive cycle, reducing dependence on virgin resources and promoting innovation.

Integrated waste management will improve the country’s image, potentially attracting investment and tourism. This reform represents a bold step towards a cleaner and more economically robust El Salvador. Investing in ANDRES is not only an environmental issue, but a commitment to sustainable growth and improving the quality of life for all citizens.
