The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$170 million loan to improve urban infrastructure and public services in Santa Tecla and La Libertad, two important districts in El Salvador.
The project includes the revitalization of municipal markets, streets, parks, and plazas, all under criteria of universal accessibility and climate resilience. It will also support 2,000 small merchants (1,500 in Santa Tecla and 500 in La Libertad) with training, productive tools, and digital payment solutions.

In addition, the loan will strengthen the urban management capacity of the municipalities of Libertad Sur and Libertad Costa, helping them sustainably address their expansion.
These improvements are estimated to directly benefit more than 4,300 residents and 3.8 million tourists annually visiting La Libertad, creating safer, more orderly, and more dynamic spaces. The loan has a 25-year term, with a 5.5-year grace period, and an interest rate based on SOFR. With this support, El Salvador is moving toward more modern, productive, and community-friendly cities.
