The Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOPT) is working to obtain financing totaling US$73 million for the execution of 11 risk mitigation projects in El Salvador. According to MOPT head, Romeo Herrera, the funds will be provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank (WB).
The financing requested includes $38 million from the World Bank and $35 million from the IDB, which will be used for critical interventions in vulnerable areas of the country. Priority areas include the Italia District, the Los Santos neighborhood in Soyapango, and the La Isla community in San Salvador, as well as the Comalapa highway and the road to the port of La Libertad.
Herrera highlighted that one of the key projects to be financed with the World Bank is the risk mitigation in La Canoa, a critical sector on the Litoral highway, affected by the overflowing of the Río Grande of San Salvador.
Likewise, the execution of these works is scheduled to begin this year, with the objective of reducing risks in the areas most affected by natural phenomena.
These projects financed by the IDB and the WB will not only protect communities and infrastructure in the country, but will also strengthen El Salvador’s capacity to face and overcome the challenges presented by natural phenomena, as risk mitigation on important roads is vital for the transportation of people and goods, avoiding interruptions that could affect the economy.
