In recent years, La Unión Sur has experienced growing demand for seafood, both domestically and internationally.

Faced with these challenges, the government is committed to improving production capacity, generating jobs, boosting marketing, elevating product quality through the cold chain, implementing sustainable fishing practices, and diversifying smaller-scale economic activities with the new, modern Punta Chiquirín Pier, a comprehensive initiative that combines growth opportunities and the development of a strategic tourism hub.

The infrastructure improvement, which was led by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte (MOPT) with an investment of more than $7.6 million, includes the construction of the new, modern Punta Chiquirín Pier, which includes identifying investment opportunities, implementing sustainable fishing techniques, improving facilities, and creating new sources of income through tourism and other complementary activities.

In addition, the complex is comprised of six zones: Zone 1: General Entrance Zone 2: Fisherman’s Support Zone Zone 3: Naval Force Facilities Zone 4: General Parking and Collection Center Zone 5: Tourist Zone Zone 6: Dual-use pier (fishing and tourism)

This benefit will reach more than 48,000 salvadorans in the eastern region of the country and the general population, opening a new tourist destination with restaurants, a children’s playroom, a breastfeeding room, a hiking trail, a multipurpose room, a recreational area, a collection center, a Naval Force building, a boat workshop, a boat parking lot, a treatment plant, among other facilities.
This effort is coordinated comprehensively by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), through CENDEPESCA, together with the Ministerio de Turismo (MITUR), the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte (MOPT), the Policía de Turismo, the Autoridad Marítima Portuaria, and other institutions.
