The Port of Acajutla registered a 36.36% increase in its trade flow, handling 302,061 metric tons between january 1 and 25. This result reflects the positive impact of the modernization and dredging work being carried out at this strategic terminal for El Salvador’s maritime trade.
According to the Pacific Port Union, this growth represents an additional 80,542 metric tons compared to the same period last year, demonstrating a more dynamic start to the year in port operations. The volume handled corresponds to general cargo, solid bulk, and liquid bulk, in both import and export activities.
Port authorities explained that this performance is linked to the dredging work at the Port of Acajutla, whose main objective is to remove sediment that accumulates over time and improve the port’s depth. This aims to facilitate the entry, operation and exit of larger vessels, increasing operational capacity and safety in maritime maneuvers.
The modernization of the infrastructure will optimize port logistics and strengthen the competitiveness of the country’s maritime trade. With a deeper and more efficient port, operating times and logistics costs will be reduced, benefiting both importers and exporters.
The Pacific Port Union emphasized that the dredging work is being carried out with specialized equipment and under strict environmental control and monitoring measures, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the marine ecosystem during the execution of the works.
In addition to the impact on operations, the increase in trade flow translates into a greater supply of products for the domestic market, strengthened exports, job creation, increased tax revenue, and greater confidence in public administration. These improvements prepare the Port of Acajutla to support the future growth of foreign trade and consolidate it as a key driver of the country’s economic development.
