To strengthen food security and improve the productive conditions of the agricultural sector, the Government of El Salvador, through the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) and its Production Increase Program, launches the plan to increase bean production under irrigation in strategic areas such as San Marcos Lempa, Jiquilisco, department of Usulután.
This program is part of a broader strategy to increase agricultural productivity in the country, guaranteeing production at all times of the year, thanks to technical support; to reduce the internal deficit of agricultural products and boost the rural economy.

The initiative to increase bean production benefits more than 17,000 farmers and contemplates the expansion of more than 20,000 blocks of winter bean cultivation areas and other varieties adapted to irrigation systems, which allows for better use of water resources and extension of agricultural production cycles.
The expected yields are greater than 23 quintals per apple, thanks to the application of technology, specialized technical assistance and high-yield seeds, to supply local markets. Likewise, technical support will guarantee bean production at all times of the year and increase harvest yield per block of land.

The initiative includes access to agricultural inputs, technical assistance and community organization, which favors small and medium-sized bean producers in San Marcos Lempa, Jiquilisco and other areas with irrigation potential.
With support for small and medium-sized farmers, the Government reaffirms its commitment to promoting a sustainable agricultural model, increasing national production of basic foods such as beans, corn, vegetables and fruits to contribute to the food security of the Salvadoran population, in addition to reducing dependence on imports and strengthening the competitiveness of the agricultural sector.
