With 58 votes, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador ratified the International Coffee Agreement 2022, signed last august 1st, 2023 in London. This agreement seeks to promote the development of the coffee sector at a global level and to promote a more equitable and sustainable trade for the benefit of all the actors involved.
The main objective of the agreement is to strengthen the role of coffee in the world economy, especially in producing countries such as El Salvador. By promoting a favorable market, it is expected to boost the generation of foreign exchange and social and economic development, fundamental pillars for the salvadoran economy.
In addition, the importance of coffee in the social sphere is recognized, since its production in El Salvador is mostly carried out on small family farms. This agricultural model improves the living conditions of thousands of families, highlighting its role in the fight against poverty and the promotion of well-being in rural communities.
The agreement also establishes measures to ensure the sustainability of the sector, encouraging practices that promote environmental protection and the efficient use of resources. This approach seeks to align economic development with the preservation of the natural environment in the coffee growing areas of the country.
The ratification by El Salvador follows the approval of this agreement by other nations such as Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Nicaragua, Japan and Switzerland. These accessions reinforce the global commitment to the growth of the coffee sector and the generation of fairer trade.
With this action, El Salvador reaffirms its position as a key player in the international coffee panorama, contributing to improve the living conditions of its producers and strengthening its economy through the export of this valuable product.
