The Government of El Salvador through the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM) and the International Geothermal Association (IGA) launched the IGA Academy, an academy designed to train new generations of experts, engineers and technicians worldwide in the development and management of geothermal resources.
The launch was held in El Salvador, a leading country in the region whose geothermal source represents 25% of the national energy matrix, with concrete expansion plans for 2030 with the construction of new geothermal plants in the east of the country, the expansion of capacity in existing plants and the exploration of more resources throughout the country.
“Our country is not only a reference for its geothermal vision, but it is also a seedbed for new generations, since we train and certify technicians, both national and foreigners from all over the world, being education an important axis for us. Under this premise, today we join IGA Academy, providing the talent of our collaborators to guide and educate”, said Daniel Alvarez, General Director of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines, during the launching event.
IGA Academy will be led by the International Geothermal Association and has as its main objective to train a highly qualified workforce capable of leading the innovation, development and sustainable management of geothermal resources. IGA Academy will offer a blended approach, combining classroom and virtual training, to reach both local and international talent.
Among the courses to be taught, highlights include: Power Plant Technologies, Geothermal Exploration, Geothermal Heating and Cooling, Project Management and Finance, and Investing in the Geothermal Sector, among other trending topics for the sector.
The first course will be held on december 9 in Milan, Italy, marking the beginning of an annual program that will cover different regions. The professors will be certified members of the IGA, although international experts may join to teach specific topics.
Marit Brommer, executive director of the IGA, emphasized: “We are committed to geothermal energy training and education, as this is essential to meet the growing global demand for clean and sustainable energy solutions. We are pleased that El Salvador is joining this initiative”.
The creation of the IGA Academy only reinforces El Salvador’s commitment to clean energy, but also lays the groundwork for accelerating the global adoption of geothermal technologies. By investing in education and hands-on experience, this international academy will become a benchmark of sustainability and prosperity for future generations.
Course information will be available on the IGA website soon, allowing professionals from around the world to join this effort to transform renewable energy into an accessible and sustainable reality.
